One thing we can honestly say about God, is that He has stated that He is God and changes not. From the begin, God established a precedent in the Genesis 3 with Adam and Eve when they found themselves naked in the Garden of Eden. One would think that when God, took the skin of a Lamb to cover their nakedness that God was just being kind and displaying a attribute of love for fallen man. We know now, that God was establishing a precedent that “it is only by the shedding of innocent blood, there will be atonement for sin”.

Ever since man’s fall in the garden of Eden, the motif of innocent blood being shed for the covering of sin as been consistent and constant.

On The Day Atonement, the ceremony performed by the High Priest who took two goat in to the Holy of Holies, was foreshadowing of what Jesus’ Blood would do for the entire world. One of the goat's throat was cut, and its blood shed, the High Priest then sprinkled that blood on to the Mercy Seat which is the lid for The Ark of the Covenant. The High Priest would then place his bloody hands on the head of the other goat and confess the sin of Israel on to that goat’s head, that goat would then be driven away from into the wilderness bearing the Israel’s transgression. Hence the concept of the innocent taking blame and term scapegoat came about.

This is the very reason for John 3:16, Jesus Christ who became our scapegoat, and bore the sin of the world, the “Agnus Dei”, fulfils the promise with His sacrificial work on the cross, making Himself the ultimate Scapegoat for the world.
